One very effective solution is short screen movies depicting how-to steps.
If your user base can support streaming, larger file downloads and the
subject matter is appropriate, nothing beats seeing something demonstrated
with audio and digital video steps.
With QuickTime for instance, you can support multiple language tracks the
user can select at will, Flash, subtitles, accompanying text or web pages,
branching logic and jump to other demos, etc.
