His main argument of course agrees with what I was saying about hackers not
being scientists before. I worry though that in concentrating too much on
art painters rather than art-work painters he can replace the "math envy" he
mentions with the "art envy" that afflicts poor graphic designers (resulting
in such things as mystery-meat navigation that has no place in a functional
piece of work).

Whoever coined the term "hacker" for programmer had the right idea, since a
hacker (in the original sense of someone who made furniture with an axe) had
strong functional requirements on his work that don't necessarily apply to
fine art, as well as aesthetic considerations.
