Melanie, I would suggest that you start out w/ Information Anxiety 2 by
Richard Saul Wurman. He speaks about how Writers & Graphic Designers need to
be the same person to effectively do their job. He speaks mainly about books
more than interactive media and he calls it Information Architecture. He
coined the term in the mid-80's to discuss why IA needs to be considered for
all media.

Also, Melanie, IA is not a separate discipline. It is a way of looking at
other disciplines and giving it guidance. You are right, many people like
writers are doing IA every day. But are they doing it consciously and with
the same focused understanding? Again, if you read Info Anxiety you will see
a bit of what I mean as Wurman is much better at outlining these points than
I am.
