Visual design I believe is critical to the satisfaction a user has with
an interface - and to be really good it has to display and react with
high visual quality. this means Interaction and visual design are
closely linked.

absolutely. but the process to create online branding (the visual
language, not necessarily the interaction design) is a highly defined
process, one that often focuses on wordplay, image collages, mood
boards, and eventually a merging with interaction design schematics. to
attempt to design and present both aspects of the user experience
simultaneously to the client, without giving each it's due process, is
the frustrating aspect I spoke of.
