Hi Sean,

At IconMedialab in Hamburg, we successfully tested date formats for this 
very reason: our Siemens Medical project was multinational (Germany, 
Sweden, Norway, and the US). We concluded:

1. Separators of a slash (/) instead of a period/full stop (.) were 
acceptable in Europe.
2. Using DD/MMM/YY such as 21 Mar 03 worked in the US; for the same 
date, 21/03/03 did not.
