Simple: ask the user.

Ask the user once [1] and store the pref in a cookie (if you can) or at the
server. Then you can retrieve it and change the presentation accordingly.

[1] Since you'll do this once, you can ask for prefs on variations of
formatting in various contexts you mentioned.
