Forming a definition is a good way of consolidating our understanding
regarding Information Architecture. But that implies we have something
fundamental for consolidation. Do we? Can we even identify the essence
of what IA is? If we can't, we are not ready for a solid definition.
May be IA is still in the chaotic primordial state - a state of flux
defying definition.

Of course, anyone can claim to be an Information Architect. But true
Information Architects should be able to provide a solid definition of
what IA is. Since we have so many Information Architects among us, we
shouldn't have to struggle so long for merely a definition of IA. 

May be we should just admit the collective ignorance and focus the
discussion on best practices.
