absoultely. but I've encountered far too many sites (and designers)
which implement breadcrumbs in very shallow arenas. context is
important, but not if you're going to sacrifice consistency and/or
legibility.

***CASE STUDY***

we're presently merging the datek.com and ameritrade.com sites into one
user experience. the 'site' is being designed more akin to an
application -- a trading platform -- rather than an deep, drilldown,
navigable information site. the trading and porfolio sections are
extremely shallow, with contextual links to related features, yet other
sections might warrant the use of breadcrumbs (such as help), but we're
very wary in establishing metaphors that cannot be used consistently
across the site.
