: "Breadcrumbs" are really better thought of as "street signs," which as
: Chiara says show you where you are in the site. Which is why they tend to
: be most useful on larger sites, especially those with users who arrive
: through deep-linking.

The part of the Breadcrumbs that functions as a street sign is the last
unliked bit (the current page). The rest of the text string provides much
more information. (Which is what Chiara actually described)

I feel the term breadcrumbs is a very good metaphor & title, because it
instantly tells us what it is. Everyone has been introduced to Hansel &
Gretel at some point in their life, and the people who use the term are IAs
and Web developers - where jargon is necessary. What is simpler:

- "Please modify the CSS for the breadcrumbs"

 or

- "Please modify the CSS for the row of links at the top of the layout that
orients the user about the Web site's hierarchy, current location and
walked-through path"

Well?

I think it is a really good and versatile term for us, while completely
irrelevant to the end user to whom the jargon is unimportant. They just need
to look at it and 'get' all the information it can provide.

(Not flamming you George, I just think it is
one of the few great terms of the trade)
