Climb up the tree of abstraction, by eliminating the issue altogether: do it
for them.
Where you provide this explanation/instruction, place a link/button, which
when activated actually checks/turns on the radio button in question. You
could even distinguish the post-click state by underlining or changing the
color of the text label, if that's necessary or desirable. This is what
JavaScript (or the DOM tree) was invented for. :-) You could also place an
invisible layer, which is transparent except for the red circle that points
out the said radio button. So when the child clicks on your explanation
link/button, the visibility of this layer is turned on/off, guiding him/her
to the spot. This was essentially the basis of Apple's online help system
from a decade ago.
