If the goal of the counter is to provide some statistical feedback about
visits to your website then that that information should remain private.
The counter can also serve as an indicator of how popular the site is to
general public and should i even invest my time and browse through the
site. Basically if other people came here then maybe i should do the same.
Also creating dynamic content management based on what the counter says can
help you and your users determine what is really hot and what is not. I used
to have a counter for each page link listed on the site map, which helped
visitors rank some of my content

Subject: [Sigia-l] Site Counters - good or bad

Hi:

I'm looking for support for the notion that counters on web sites are
not a good idea and that there are better ways to track traffic and
efficacy of a site.

Usually, I would do my own research on this subject but with the
expertise on this list, I thought I'd start here. I'm sure someone can
recommend a good article or two on why a site (especially an .edu) site
might not want to incorporate a counter.

Thanks for any leads. By the way, support can come in the form of
opinions also. :-)
Jan
