I come at this from a slightly different perspective than most people as I
manage enterprise content which has a significant web component, but may
also have a complex paper component such as manuals, a learning component
which may be classroom or e-learning, and other materials like marketing
materials, business reports, technical support materials etc. The issue of
managing the breadth of this type of content causes many problems for the
information architect with some CMS.
Some of the problems are:
-inability to manage multiple types of information and produce effective
outputs in multiple media
-inability to support granular (paragraphs, sentences, phrases, even words)
reusable content unless it is an XML-based system
-flexible workflow to accommodate multiple publications cycles
-powerful reporting capabilities to track reusable content in "where used"
reports, derivative reuse, tracking branching of content, content relationships
-strong support for element level metadata
-support of systematic reuse (automatic population of content to
appropriate documents based on models)
