One of the reasons I incorporated last year was specifically because a
large company who wanted to work with my team would only work through a
corporation (in my case an LLC) and one with insurance. So I bit the bullet
and found a lawyer for the incorporation. I also found a good online source
for E&O insurance: ccbsure.com, which specialized in insurance for
technology companies.
The E&O policy I ended up with is through Chubb, a well respected insurance
company. The policy was for $1 million, with a $2 million umbrella. While
not cheap, the policy was nowhere near the $5,000 you mentioned. But it was
certainly worth it to get the job.
I'd be happy to answer any additional questions offline.
