I just have to weigh in (living in nyc for pretty much my whole life).
Some of you may think this is both a good thing and a bad thing, and its a little off-subject. At my local subway stop there are 2 entrances. The one closest to my house had a token clerk on duty only until 9 am weekday mornings, and not at all on weekends. The MTA relaced the clerk with a machine, installed the new card readers, and now the entrance is open all day til 10 pm and on weekends (whoo hoo). So I'm thrilled. It saves me two long blocks and no more running down 89th street at 5 to 9 praying the clerk didn't leave early.
More to the point, does anyone think that the machines are geared most towards regular users, who, over time, learn to operate the interface quickly? Because for me, the first time was a teeny bit tricky, but now I barely have to look.
