We've moved from an era when content management meant a semblance of order
in UNIX directories to sophisticated software tools that manage and deliver
dynamic content from highly structured relational databases (and everything
in between). Content management systems can be thought to give both IA and
interface design "roots" and "wings" but as designers we're not always aware
of the parameters the CMS offers. Content Management Systems were raised as
a point of interest, confusion, excitement, consternation at our last
discussion, so we've decided to tackle the subject in a series of talks.

Carter Hansen is our special guest speaker this month. Lead of User Centered
Design and Vignette expert at Wachovia, Carter will join us in a discussion
centering around:
* conceptually, how do CMS systems "position" information architecture and
interface design-what are some of the limitations and possibilities?
* how can information architects and interaction designers leverage CMS
features in user centered design?
* what do CMS designers wish IA/ID designers knew about content management
systems (and vice versa)

We've adopted an "every other month" approach and will now meet one month
for a purely social/networking cocktail hour in a local bar/restaurant and
the next for a more focused exploration of issues facing the IA/UE fields in
an office or conference room setting. This month is our focused discussion
and Wachovia in Charlotte has generously offered to host us in their
Learning Lab on the 2nd floor of 201 S. Tryon (at the corner of 4th and
Tryon, Dean & Deluca is on this corner. Come into the lobby and take the
escalator to the second floor. Get off the escalator and make a hard left
and then take the first corridor to the left-the Lab is the first door on
the left.

(As always, advanced preparation is *not* required.)

Please pass this message along to anyone you know in the area who is
interested in and/or practicing information architecture, interaction design
or user-centered web design.
