Amazon has the "Earth's Biggest Selection", so maybe the user just didn't
know where to start finding laptops. He entered "laptops" as the search
query didn't mean he wanted to get his ultimate answer "a low-cost, yet
reliable laptop computer that will last 4 years for his son who is going
away to school" immediately. He did this may just like he asked a
salesperson in a physical store "Where can I find laptops in you shop?". So
maybe the user just wanted to go to the "Electronics" > "Computers" >
"Laptops & Notebooks" page and started browsing from there. Combining search
and browse are many users' web surfing techniques nowadays.
