In many ways I agree with you, but...
I deliberately choose not to spend my time arguing about semantical
meanings of words with students; especially considering that other
professors are telling them the words mean something else. I find other
ways to communicate the concepts that I need to teach.
In many way the term 'hierarchy' is a polluted term and I choose to
route around the problem rather than spend my time trying to bend the
world to my vision.
If I'm going to spend the time forcing people to see things my way --
it's going to be about something that means a tremendous amount to me
-- and the purity of words is not my battle, or my passion.
