Yes, a timeline-based system combined storyboard like diagrams IIRC (I have
no idea how I know this, so maybe I just dreamt it).

You can get pyrotechnic choreography software to help manage it for you (of
course). <http://www.infinityvisions.com/showdirector.htm> is an example of
such.
