... and those of us who have already run their own consultancies and have
now moved on to large organizations because they want more stability in
their lives do all we can to make those orgs better from the inside.

...and, like i stated, i agree with your stance... and am actually doing the same thing as you right now... but cooper et. al. would never do the same. cooper changed the industry by writing a book that any executive could read, digest and say, "wow. that makes sense." and allow wiggle room for us to push forward. that was his contribution to corporate orgs -- and our struggles within.

as for the innies, i'm finding that if you:

a) know your sh!t and are proactive (haha, corporate word ;), relentless, and thorough
b) fill a void by designing solid, strategic, user-centered solutions (making a meaningful impact in the company's strategic direction & bottom line) and
c) try not to step on *too many* toes (pick and choose very carefully)

you *can* make major waves -- in both the design of the user-facing domain and the structure of the organization -- and it can be extremely satisfying. but <CLARIFIER>, that completely depends on the structure and make-up of the organization; especially the ratio of people in power that "get it" to the ones that "don't get it." my present situation is full of red tape, but ripe for change. it sounds like a contradiction, but amazingly, it's not. well, at least as of 6:22pm today.

now ask me about my corporate gigs previous to this and my face would begin to twitch... the "get it" ratio was 0:all back then.
