As an IA at Dynamic Diagrams, I just wanted to point out that for our IAs,
the "time intensive nature" of the z-diagram happens at the analysis stage,
before the diagram is made.  IAs are then paired with designers, who are
responsible for the creation of the diagram itself.  Maintenance, if the IA
is a solid one, is usually minimal.

Also, I agree with Jason, that this type of diagram is not what you want to
use if you require rapid and iterative prototyping.  Rather, we use
z-diagrams as a way to visually depict the new IA based on requirements and
recommendations that came out of the analysis phase.  We've found that this
diagram is particularly helpful in terms of getting project buy-in and
understanding at the management and/or non-technical level.
