So why declare it a 'standard'? Just because it's *perceived* to be used a
lot in general, and, to some extent, in design/IA?

This ought not to be a sufficient reason to declare an app 'standard'.

I beg to differ. Tools reflect the craftsman. One shouldn't be seen to be
promoting good design/IA/GUI all the while using *and* declaring an
admittedly badly designed app the standard in design/IA/GUI software.

I have indeed suggested several such tools here on many occasions. But
that's not the point; not my point anyway.

My strong objection is to the wrong-headed march towards a 'standard'. Are
you for a moment implying that IA could not be practiced if Visio was not
declared a standard? Utter nonsense. Is there a direct correlation between
the quality of IA work and the use of Visio? Of course not.

By all means. Use anything you want. Just don't declare what you use a
'standard'. Declaring 'standards' is the job of PR depts of companies that
sell those products.
