Probably a cognitive study from a legitimate source that said that
vertical lists are easier to scan than horizontal and vertical lists.
It'd even be interesting to hear what Jakob has to say on the subject.

Disclaimer: this is not to say that every design decision needs to be
bolstered by research. But it never hurts.
