Ben,
You bring up a thorny issue amongst MLIS degree
students. Indeed, degree programs need to change with
the times, but in fact, they have been. What was once
called an MLS (Master of Library Science) is now
called an MLIS (Master of Library and Information
Science). I am a practicing IA and have been so for
several years before pursuing an MLIS degree at Pratt
in NYC. The field of librarianship is fighting against
years of ingrained stereotypes to remain relevant in
an ever increasing digital world. Almost all of my
coursework has been focused on technology issues. I
plan on never working in a traditional library
setting, and I"m finding there are a lot of
opportunities for those willing to pursue a
non-traditional path.
