The Greater Boston Chapter of the ACM offers a fall and spring series of
Professional Development Seminars. These are an unusually good opportunity
to learn from acknowledged experts in their field during an all day session.
The next GBC/ACM Professional Development Seminar should be of particular
interest to SIGCHI and SIG-IA members:

Seminar: Recent Breakthroughs in Web Site Usability Research
Lecturers: Jared M. Spool and Christine Perfetti (both of User Interface
    Engineering)
Date: Saturday October 5, 2002 at MIT room 26-100
Time: 9:00 am - 4:30 pm
Advanced Registration Price: $80.00 until Monday, September 30, 2002.
Regular Price: $90.00

Overview: The seminar presents some of the recent breakthroughs that have
occurred in the area of web site usability. User Interface Engineering is a
leading producer of breakthrough web site research and they have focused
their work on understanding just what it takes to make web sites more
usable.

Who should attend: Anyone interested in learning the challenges of building
usable web sites

Seminar Topics:
o Why the 'scent' of information is one of the most fundamental concepts in
    web design
o The seven types of navigation pages and how each one functions
o How many users are *really* enough for usability testing (and new
strategies for dealing with large numbers)
o Why download time isn't the big culprit we all thought it was and why
users who complain about it are actually telling you something
    completely different
o Why new technologies like Flash are going to change how web applications
are built and when they are a big mistake
o Why the best sites prevent their users from using the site's Search
    facility

Lecturers Biography:
Jared Spool --
If you've ever seen Jared speak about usability, you know that he's probably
the most effective, knowledgeable communicator on the subject. Jared has
built User Interface Engineering into the largest research organization of
its kind in the world. He's been working in the field of usability and
design since 1978, before the term "usability" was ever associated with
computers.

Christine Perfetti --
Christine is one of the most requested instructors at User Interface
Engineering. She has worked with dozens of companies on their toughest web
design problems. In the last year alone, she's been a top-rated presenter
at CHI 2001, the UIE Research Forums, Intranets 2001, and STC regional
conferences
