I'm my opinion it doesn't matter what technology you implement a feature
with, as long as the user can easily determine how to use it. If the menu
system hides the vast majority of navigation structure then you need to make
sure that the keywords that trigger the reveal are appropriate and aids the
user memory of the information it contains. 

Most people are used to using the menu system in word processing
applications etc. and I personally don't see any reason why this can't and
shouldn't be transferred to the web.

I think that this type of question highlights the fact that usability is so
often sidelined by technology implementation. Focus on the users first not
the technology.
