That, and why bother putting extra load on your search database?

Nip it in the bud in two ways:

a) Use JS to check for blank search terms on the page
b) In case user has JS disabled, make sure your server-side script actually 
does a check for null values before deciding to pull all the darn records 
out of your search db. :)
