I agree 100%.

The idea that I can be presented with a objective distribution (love
that algorithm) of news topics, from disparate sources around the world,
is very appealing to me.

If I want to narrow down the presentation of "popular" topics to
specific stories, I simply use the search interface (i.e. sniper).

If I want to read from a specific new source, about a specific story,
then I include that in my search parameter (i.e. cnn.com sniper).

I think it's a pretty sweet application as is.
