You may be right that Swedes would do even better w/o multiple choice. 
I don't know much about U.S. vs Swedish educational practices.

I do know that multiple choice can be easy or hard. I've had multiple 
choice where the choices weren't scattered around the globe like, IIRC, 
they were in this quiz,  but were the right answer plus several of its 
immediate neighbours. Things can get really interesting when you have 
to make that kind of choice. In fact, despite my previous post on the 
topic, it might be the case that that blank-map quiz could probably be 
made harder *with* multiple choice than it could be without any 
choices. But now I fear I'm really getting OT.
