and from what starting position do they adjust it? Should we serve up every
page in microscopic font which spans the entire monitor, consoling ourselves
that "the reader can adjust to suit themselves"?

The user may want to be *able* to adjust the font/line/window size, but they
*expect* it to be "right" in the first place. Then there are all the users
that don't know they could adjust the window size or the font size in the
first place. Thus the question on optimal line size is still very pertinent.
