Feedback on this topic thus far has assumed a fixed
column width for the text.
If you are working with a fluid design you need
to consider a *range* of readable lengths. A 100-
character text column in a browser opened to a
width of 800 pixels may "unwrap" to 125+ characters
at a width of 1024 pixels, which may then
be too longer than you want.
There is no definitive answer here because it
also depends on the percentage of the page
(table percentages) that the text column occupies.
I believe, however, that around 65-75 characters per
line at 800x600 works well at larger browser sizes,
as well as smaller, without significantly lowering
readability in any case.
Just something else to consider...
Cheers,
Jim
