If Tufte is to be believed, he was ignored because he didn't explain his
concerns in a way anyone could understand, and thus the threat was not fully
understood. (Visual Explanations, pg 38)

BTW, Tufte is on the lecture circuit once again. If you haven't seen him,
even if you have a book or two, and you can scrape together the cash-- or
get your company to do so-- it's well worth it. He's a wonderful speaker as
well as an insightful gentleman.
