This initiative is probably the best thing happening to IA for a long time.
I've been lurking mostly for the past year and a half on this list - due to
a slight shift in my own carreer towards more management and less
involvement (ie practical IA work).
But seen from my vantage point (Denmark - Europe) what AIfIA constitutes is
an impressive list of influential people now working together to manifest IA
as a key profession in web-development.
This may seem a little intimidating for some people, but this is exactly
what IA needs right now. Not just in the USA but also in Europe and probably
in other places as well.
In light of the present situation every IA around the world will benefit
from a strong organisation with dedicated people - even if it means that the
individual Information Architect will have less headroom to define IA on his
own terms.
Consolidating IA is a key step towards making IA a well respected and highly
valued profession.
What we saw two years ago was a change in the business that meant less room
for less well defined disciplines.
This initiative will make sure that IA will suffer less, the next time we're
hit by recession or other "earth-quakes".
That's my take on the issue.
