Thanks for the responses. I've been saving the best to my research
collection, but I've been decidedly 'underwhelmed' by the majority of
them...especially the 'glitzy' ones, all flash-based. They take forever to
load and just aren't worth the investment in 'sitting'.

An admittedly low-tech solution, I liked at least considering the offering
at http://www.historychannel.com/perl/timeline.pl?year=2000

Reassembling the various components of the function (the main search for the
function is lower right), I think they can be redesigned for a more
'appealing' solution.
