Who owns the telephones?

'Managers' who ask the question 'how are we going to make money with the
Internet?' would never ask the question, 'how are we going to make money
with the telephone?' And rightly so, because the Internet is a conduit and
not the endgame.

For many months now, I've stopped going to news sites, period. First a
transition from print to web versions, now totally aggregated. Through
various aggregation apps (a couple I built myself), I simply 'fetch' all the
news I want, when I want them (I set the frequency of fetching) and in the
format I want (sometimes just headlines, sometimes summaries, sometimes a
quick HTML rendering, sometimes similar news collated, sometimes a direct
trip to the specific 'page' at the site, etc). Essentially, from global to
technical news, I am in charge. Frankly, I've already forgotten what most of
the news sites (I used to frequent) even look like these days. I don't care.
Ditto for weather, stocks, etc.

We're at the cusp of a fairly significant transformation of the concept of a
'website'. And, I'm afraid, for a lot of domains, there won't be any. The
web/Internet is about to get a heck of a lot more granular. The notion that
departments like HR would 'own' website in this new ballgame can only be
humorous.

Best,

Ziya
