Check out XML and SOAP, they are making gains in the data integration area,
in fact there is an ISO/IEC standard that pertains to this kind of faceted
classification.
Also of note is the Java search engine that Stanford has published. It is
very elegant, uses true faceted classification and lets the seeker decide
when to switch from browsing to analytical search methods. It is on my
starred list.
