There are products out there that claim to do the job, I have heard
different reports on how well they all work. The OCLC SiteSearch Open Source
Project being the big one, that I know of.
http://www.sitesearch.oclc.org/
"The OCLC SiteSearchT software provides a comprehensive solution for
managing distributed library information resources in a World Wide Web
environment. It offers tools that integrate electronic resources under one
web interface, provide flexible access to resources, and build text and
image databases locally. "
I would imagine this model extends beyond the library world, for other large
diverse types of sites. Are libray sites really that different?
