I agree with Dave that "IA is LIS interactive, or LIS meets UCD."
For those who think librarians just help users find information, I like to
encourage you to talk to special/corporate librarians. Special/corporate
librarians often provide value added services, like analyzing information,
preparing reports to be used by the company's clients, etc. that are more
about accomplishing "corporate goals" than just finding information.
Dave also mentioned, "Why separate from LS?"
I'd like to add "clarity of what IA is."
Most people don't know the full scope of what librarians do, because it is
not obvious and visible to the user. As a result, librarians are often
undervalued and underpaid. If you can bring clarity of what it is IAs do to
the table/client, IA will continue to separate from LS as a discipline as
well as raise the value of the IA in the organization.
