[Sigia-l] IA and medium

Actually, I do think IA is medium specific (or at
least should be). Not all IA's have library science
backgrounds or put a lot of empahsis on traditional
library training. The web gave birth to IA and as a
result of being overloaded with information, there is
now a heightened awareness to organizing and
displaying it effectively-a different kind of
awareness than organing library materials generated
prior to the web. Of course IA has similarities to
lots of other areas-library science, "wayfinding",
etc. but I think what makes IA unique *is* it's
medium-the web-and how information is organized for
Internet users.
Also, I think broadening the definition of IA to span
various mediums could be detrimental in the long run.
Its hard enough already to get people to take IA
seriously. In my experience, "we help people find
information" and trying to provide expertise in too
many different areas doesn't work. I think IA NEEDS to
be medium specific to gain acceptance and
understanding.
