[Sigia-l] winning the debate (was: research: when is it enough?)

Personally, when confronted by stubborn and mule-headed
management types, I'm perfectly content to let them have their way. I
make certain they understand why I disagree, and what I see as the
disadvantages to their approach... including research, if I think my
audience will find it compelling, and then I wash my hands and wait.
If, in fact, their approach is a bad one, then they'll hear about it from
their users, their peers, and (possibly) their employees. Nothing like a
little pain to make folks appreciate having a 'subject matter expert'
around.
Case in point: I'm architecting a site right now that was launched less
than a year ago. The architecture we're adopting is identical to what
the previous IA initially recommended all those months back... but at
that point in time, the organization wasn't ready for it. The site went live
with mgmt's thumbprints all over it, everyone in the organization felt the
pain, and now... well, now they're ready to listen.
Best to all,
Christopher Turner
