This (crashing) also happens to me a lot when embedding other
applications' objects into large Word docs. Microsoft's object embedding
is an idea that didn't work all that well in Windows 3.11 and still
doesn't work all that well now. 

Another reason not to do this is that if you want to share the Word
document with another editor who does not have the correct version Visio
installed, the embedded object isn't always treated nicely. As I recall,
they sometimes can't see it (or print it) at all. 

Another advantage to embedded GIFs is that they are a lot easier to
manipulate and move around in your Word document.
