I can add an anecdote to that one.

A few years ago, we were working on an internal system for a major 
publisher to pull together all of their book, product and author 
information in a coherent structure that everyone could access. During our 
user interviews, we asked where they were getting various kinds of 
information now. Many of the editors were using the web - Amazon, personal 
author sites, and so on - for information about their own books.
