Gutenberg Bible said to be printed before 1456

Definitions from "Encyclopedia of the Book"

foliation: the forerunner of pagination; only the recto sides of leaves
in manuscripts or early printed books being numbered, usually in roman
numerals. Leaf numerals were printed as early as 1470, Johannes da Spira
of Venice being the first printer to do this.

pagination: a sequence of numbers used to identify the pages of a book.
Pagination was not in common use until the mid-16th century, prior to
which only the recto of each leaf had been numbered, i.e. foliated.

In music published during the 18th century, especially by John Walsh,
double, triple and even quadruple pagination occurs, indicating the use
in later editions of plates from former ones.

recto: 1. a bibliographer's term for the upper side of a leaf of
parchment or paper whether written or printed upon or not.
2. the right-hand pages of a book, bearing uneven numbers.
