I think your confusion stems from your misunderstanding of this term.

The difference between utilitarian and non-utilitarian is the difference
between the pleasure of experiencing Warhol's "Soup Cans" -- and -- the
pleasure of going to the grocery store, exchanging money for a soup can,
taking the soup can home with you, carrying it in your hand, opening the
can, cooking the soup, eating the soup, recycling the can, and shitting
it all out a little later. 

In fact, a good shit is probably the best metaphor. The bathroom is the
most useful spot in a house.
