During the crazy days of dotcomdom, I remember being laughed at a couple of
times for suggesting in meetings that it would be an utter waste of money to
install these Swiss-army-knife tangles of wishful thinking. They would sell
an installation and then take two years and ten times more money doing
essentially custom, ad hoc programming. But that's, hopefully, water under
the bridge.
The question is what are those companies that installed the Vignettes and
the $5 million CRM packages and Knowledge Management contraptions doing
these days of budget cuts and staff reductions?
The real shame is the alternative of custom building indigenous apps that
truly reflect and reshape native workflows are also pretty hard thanks to
the sorry state of large scale app servers. Their goal so far has been
billable consultancy hours as opposed to real ease of development and use.
It's a mess.
Best,
Ziya
