I'm under the impresion that all these weird new google offshoots (google
catalogs, froogle, google news, etc) are all more or less things the R&D
department has been fooling around with that they've decided to make
public. 

I don't see any reason for them to just rest on their laurels, not
innovating because they really have no competition. In my opinion, that'd
be far more Microsoftish than constantly trying to push what their
technology can do.  they're not really raking in the cash on any of these
new products, and none of them are invading other companies' markets and
putting people out of business. I see google's expansion not as a sign
that they're trying to dominate the market, but rather that they're
honestly trying to expand what users can do on the internet.
