this *may* be what you were looking for (though i suspect not) but *may* be
related anyway:

Examining User Expectations of the Location of Web Objects

indicates where users *expect* to see particular types of
information/navigation, indicating an idiomatic behaviour of sorts ... it
doesn't really talk about contextual navigation as such, but notes a
difference between internal links akin to 'sections' (the classic left-hand
nav), and external links (perhaps most likely to be contextual links) on the
right-hand side.
