Dynamics in Document Design: Creating Texts for Readers by Karen A. Schriver
(Wiley & Sons 1997)

This isn't really a book about writing but--as the subtitle suggests--about
a user-centered approach to creating documents. The book has chapters
surveying the history of writing and design as well as practical ideas and
theories on analyzing audiences, typography, pictures and testing. If you
have a background in technical writing, this stuff is probably old hat but I
found it helpful and analogous to IAing for the web when I was starting out.
