I'm sure I'm missing something here, but why do you have to show filepaths?
Why not simply indicate on the document itself:
Group1 | Group2 ...| GroupN | ThisDocument
Assuming Group and Document names are unique (I can't see why they wouldn't
be) this would describe a unique document and any level of group
association. Of course, 'ThisDocument' could have multiple URIs, depicting
its position in multiple groupings, separately.
If you're using PDF (or HTML), these URIs could be clickable so that the
actual 'filepath' is actually hidden from casual view, but still capable of
branching out to a specific local or online based doc location. The URI
doesn't need to display what it resolves to.
You could, of course, trivially write a small app that allows you to drag
and drop documents/groups within groups, much like assigning users into
groups in file sharing schemes; and, if you're adventurous, the same app
could resolve document/group belongings when requested via an HTTP request.
Then again, I might be missing something obvious here.
Best,
Ziya
