[Sigia-l] mixing apples, oranges and now only peripherally on -topic

Now that we've taken the original analogy entirely literally (Katherine, I
hope somewhere in here you've gotten help on your question!), this thread
has brought to mind a couple of things:

| I understand that shelving decisions are made based on who
| pays more for prime shelf space, but as a customer
| I'd prefer all the grated Parmesans to be together.

I remember reading -- as a kid -- a book about someone who went to work in a
grocery store and ended up reorganizing all the shelves to put associated
things together -- pancake batter and syrup; coffee and tea -- but then I
had no idea why on earth applesauce was related to pork chops. We ate little
pork that wasn't good ol' Carolina barbeque and I'd never had applesauce and
pork chops together ... so I don't think tomato:vegetable and tomato:fruit
are unreasonable. Tomatoes were considered deathly poisonous for years and
years anyway, since they're in the nightshade family.

| When I feel myself being manipulated to choose one
| specific variety or brand by making it inconvenient to find
| the others, I become ornery and make a point of
| tracking down the product *I* want to buy.

Ah, but you then *walk past* other items in the store in your hunt for that
parmesan cheese, possibly (hopefully!) picking up tea and chips (or crisps)
on your way.

Time to read Why We Buy!

| Maybe supermarkets need to come with search engines. I've
| seen some that have an index of sorts: a list of most
| common items, and their aisle locations, attached to the
| front of the shopping cart. It's a start, I guess.

Oooh, I wish. It's lovely until they shuffle things around to get you to
walk past more items. Meanwhile, there's an app for my Palm that I love love
love: J-Shopper, wherein I keep my grocery list, which I can slice and dice
by need vs have enough in the cupboard and sort by name or by aisle.

Ramble, ramble. Too pretty outside today to merely be looking at it through
a window. <sigh>
