But apparently somebody goes looking for them in the Fruit section, as was

Many supermarket sections could actually use such 're-direction' schema.

I think the issue wasn't the 'perfect' taxonomical arrangement but what the
user might end up doing. Do you want the site to be a culinary or botanical
lesson or do you want users to find what they want, regardless of their
taxonomical skills?
